Ancient Shipwreck Museum
The Ancient Shipwreck Museum is located within Kyrenia Castle. It exhibits a cargo ship that sank near Kyrenia about 2300 years ago. The oldest shipwreck is known, it is thought to have been built in 389BC, around the time of Alexander the Great. Although there are several ancient shipwrecks all over the Mediterranean, practically nothing of the ships themselves have survived. But the Kyrenia ship did. The ship is 50 feet long, made of Aleppo pine, open with short decks in the bow and stern. The wooden surface is covered with a strong layer to protect it against Mediterranean wood-eating bugs. The 4 wooden spoons, 4 bottles, 4 glasses and 4 salt cellars found explains that the crew was only four people.
