Ashworth Barracks Museum
Ashworth Barracks Museum tells the stories of some of the soldiers awarded the Victoria Cross since its inauguration by Queen Victoria in 1856. These are tales of heroism, from those awarded for bravery in the Zulu War through both world wars to present day Afghanistan. Not all are ‘combat’ VCs; come and hear about William Coultman, a First World War stretcher-bearer, awarded the DSM & Bar. MM & Bar and finally a VC. There have only been three double VCs awarded, two of which were to doctors. However, no matter what their role, VC recipients put themselves in extreme harm’s way, often saving their comrades’ lives in doing so.
