The Cherkasy Regional Museum of Art was opened to visitors in the early years of Independence in 1992. The museum started its activity in the premises of the former Communist Party of the city and initially operated as a branch of the Regional Museum of Local History, but since 1994 it has been operating as an independent museum institution. Its funds hold more than 6 thousand units. The basis of the museum exhibit, occupying 1 406 square meters, consists of collections from private collections of the counts of Bobrynsky, Kantakuzin-Speransky, Lopukhiny and Cephalopods. In general, the formation of the museum collection was made through the purchase of works from exhibitions halls of the former Soviet Union, from the Directorate of Art Exhibitions of Ukraine and the purchase of works from leading Ukrainian artists, folk masters, collectors. Today, significant contributions to the collection of museum funds are made by artists who donate their works after the completion of personal, team exhibitions and plein air.
