One of the most influential Africans of the 20th century, Léopold Sedar Senghor needs no introduction. But just in case: he’s the first African to gain a French state scholarship. The first African to gain a PhD in French Grammar. The first African elected to the French Assembly. The first African minister in a French government. The first president of an independent Senegal. However, despite leading Senegal for two decades,Senghoe is better known to many for his life outside politics. As a poet, he co-founded the negritude movement, which used literature to celebrate the African continent and champion black identity – some of the first works to do so. This museum shines a light on his remarkable life and legacy.
