German Historical Museum
The museum was founded October 28, 1987 to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Berlin and at the time was located in the Reichstag building in West Berlin. On this day, the corresponding agreement was signed by Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl and the Governing Mayor of West Berlin, Eberhard Diepgen in the Reichstag building. The first permanent exhibition of "Paintings and certificates of German History" was opened in December 1994 and included more than 2000 exhibits. German Historical Museum was supposed to be placed in a specially constructed building near the Reichstag for him. The architectural competition for the design of the new museum building has won the Italian architect Aldo Rossi. The fall of the Berlin Wall has made its own adjustments to these plans. After the reunification of Germany October 3, 1990 the federal government passed the German Historical Museum collection and the area of the Museum of German History, functioned in the GDR. So Zeughaus, the oldest building on Unter den Linden, is home to the German Historical Museum. The first exhibition in the storeroom opened in September 1991.
