The Manipur State Museum, opened in 1969 by Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, is a major tourist attraction in the state. The museum has galleries that store materials of natural science, ethnology and archeology.The museum's collection includes tribal ornaments, Manipuri textiles, agricultural equipment and other items of cultural significance to the state.The most impressive feature of the place is Hiyang Hiren, a 78-foot-long royal boat located in the open gallery.The Manipur State Museum hosts exhibitions based on cultural themes, awareness-raising programs and cultural assessment courses.
