The memorial complex is the only institution on the territory of the former USSR that was preserved to the present day, founded during the GULAG times and existed until the end of the 80s of XX century, particularly dangerous state criminals, including prisoners for political reasons were detained there. The museum complex is conventionally divided into two parts: a strict regime section with a working and residential zone and a special regime section with a cell housing barrack. 19 buildings of the complex are included in the list of cultural heritage sites of regional significance.
