A major attraction at the Museum is an exhibition entitled ‘The Durban System’ which is comprised of well-researched texts, black and white photographs and a themed environment, which work together to detail this form of urban control. This system consisted of ‘influx control’, a municipal monopoly on the production of Zulu beer, the creation of beer halls and the creation of segregated accommodation.
AIDS exhibit fresh and engrossing
The permanent exhibit added little to what you can find about apartheid South Africa in more comprehensive museums. The AIDS exhibit, which appeared to be temporary (but that wasn't clear) said something important about post-apartheid SA. The folly of the government in delay of treatment of AIDS was not overlooked at all. The exhibit emphasized the possibility of long life despite AIDS, and at least some docents were themselves is treatment.
