The Diversion Gallery
The Diversion began as a commission of a painting by leading NZ abstract painter JS (John Shotton) Parker. In 1995, entrepreneur Nick Gerritsen gave Parker an open brief to create a painting capturing the essence of Marlborough. JS Parker chose to paint the offshoot of the Wairau River known to locals as ‘The Diversion’, reflecting the turbulent light of a stormy sunrise as the river runs out to Cloudy Bay on the Pacific Coast.
Overseas visitors will find a snapshot of high quality contemporary NZ fine art, with good information on the artists available to view. The gallery is experienced at shipping art around the world.
You can also view a wide selection of limited edition screenprints, lithographs and etchings by both established and emerging artists - collectible works at an accessible price. These include a series created by senior NZ artists to raise funds for the National Whale Centre (in Picton). You can visit the NWC hub across the road to learn more about Picton's link with the whales - entry is free.
