Based on the initiative of the Belarusian cinematographers in Minsk in 1966 as a department at the studio "BelarusFilm" to collect and preserve materials about the national cinema, the popularization of its achievements. From 1982 to 1988 he was placed in the Republican House of Cinema (Church of Saints Simon and Helena), the Union of Cinematographers of the Byelorussian SSR, performing primarily an archival function. Open to regular attendance at the beginning of 2002 in a specially reconstructed by a decision of the Council of Ministers a three-storey building - an architectural monument of the first half of the twentieth century. Since January 2005 - a branch of the institution "The State Museum of History of Theater and Musical Culture of Belarus." From September 2014 - State branch of the "Belarusian National History Museum."
