Museum of the Order of the Liberation
THE ORDER OF LIBERATION was instituted by General de Gaulle in 1940 in order to "reward people or military and civil communities who will have distinguished themselves in the work of liberation of France and its Empire".
Second French national order after the Legion of Honor, the Order of the Liberation has only one rank and one title, that of Companion of the Liberation. 1,038 Liberation Crosses were awarded to individuals, 18 to military units and 5 to French municipalities: Nantes, Grenoble, Paris, Vassieux-en-Vercors and Ile de Sein.
The museum of the order of the Liberation, installed at the Invalides in Paris, recently renovated, presents in a renewed scenography the history and the commitment of the Companions of the Liberation.
