As a cantonal museum, the Nidwaldner Museum has a collection of objects and works of art that document the art and cultural history of the canton. The museum, like many regional museums, was created at the instigation of the local historical association. However, current works of art from the canton area were included in the collection early on. Today the Nidwaldner Museum consists of three houses: the salt magazine, the Winkelriedhaus with pavilion in Stans, and the Fürigen fortress in Stansstad.
The Winkelriedhaus is now used as a museum for art. A permanent exhibition has been housed in the old patrician house since 2014 and introduces the art history of the region based on works from the collection. The pavilion in the garden also shows three temporary exhibitions with artists who are related to Nidwalden and are interesting for the region.
