The Sumo Museum was opened in September 1954 to coincide with the completion of the new professional sumo house, Kuramae Kokugikan, it was created to protect and preserve the rich historical heritage of Japan's national sport.The main function of the museum is to collect and preserve a wide range of materials related to the history of sumo, from prints of wood and banzuke to ceremonial aprons.The museum also houses a research center that studies the role of sumo in Japanese culture
