The museum is dedicated to the Chuvash educator I.Y. Yakovlev (1848-1930) and the Simbirsk Chuvash school founded by him in 1868. Folk school is a unique educational institution, which included men's school, women's pedagogical courses, transformed into teachers' seminaries, men's and women's parochial schools, production workshops, a home church, an agricultural farm, a historical-ethnographic museum, a charitable society. At the beginning of the twentieth century the school became the center of culture and education of the Chuvash of the Volga region. The memorial apartment of I.Y. Yakovlev, a memorial class for the women's department of the school, opened the exposition "Culture and Life of the Chuvash of the Simbirsk Province of the late XIX - early XX centuries".
