The museum has an art section and an exhibition hall for temporary exhibitions. On March 28, 1998, the Varnavinsky Museum was given the status of a "public museum". The historical exposition of the museum includes the exhibition "The participants of rebellion under the leadership of Razin on Vetluga river", "The Robber named Lyalya". The museum also presents the most valuable archive of Mikhail Baldin, who devoted his life to the study of local history, collecting unique material on the history of the Vetluga river region. In addition to the historical exposition, the museum has an art section, including one of the most valuable and rare types of decorative art in Russia — the bone carving craft.
